About the Project

SSFM, collaborated with joint venture partner Moffat & Nichol as prime consultants for planning and design of a 213-meter long non-magnetic concrete slip to support a drive-in solenoid structure. The slip includes new forklift accessible piers with overhead trusses 14.78 meters tall, a new pedestrian bridge, as well as demolition of the existing two story wooden pier, walkway bridge, marine rail, shed and compressor.

The project required extensive site preparation of undeveloped land for utilities installation, construction of sewer connections on the pier, sewer piping from piers to a holding tank on-shore and construction of a 411 square meter rectifier and substation building for the D.C. rectifiers, transformers, and holding vault.

Through teaming and partnership with the construction team, the SSFM design team was able through value engineering, to reduce the $96 million project bid buy 10%

The project included both design-bid-build and design-build elements. Design-Bid-Build consists of constructing the 213 meter nonmagnetic concrete pier and 85-meter access trestle, including supporting facilities. Design-Build focused on the heavy infrastructure site work.
