About the Project

The 2013 Hawaii Ocean Resources Management Plan (ORMP) sets forth the State’s ocean and coastal resource management priorities. It provides the framework and implementation strategy for state agencies and collaborators. The plan embraces ecological, cultural, historic, recreational, and aesthetic values while balancing economic development in marine and coastal areas. The ORMP supports Hawaii’s vision for a healthy, productive, and sustainable ocean ecosystem that fosters economic growth while preserving Hawaii’s values and needs.

Updated in 5-year increments, the 2013 ORMP was developed with the participation of county, state, and federal agencies responsible for ocean and coastal resources. Statewide public involvement included two rounds of public listening sessions on six islands to determine how the plan can be more responsive to local communities and stewardship organizations.

The 2013 ORMP identifies 11 management priorities with their respective goals, metrics, and pathways towards implementation. This update includes performance measurement for the first time.
