Interstate H-1 Contraflow Lane

Honolulu, Hawaii

CLIENT

State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation, Highways Division

About the Project

Interstate H-1 Contraflow Lane improvements entailed approximately 110,000 sq. ft. of full deck repair to 6.1 miles of contraflow lanes in selected areas between the Pearl City and Waimalu Viaducts. The work was conducted over 20 months.

The project incorporated special procedures including hydro-demolition methods for full depth deck repair, installation of micro-piles at the east end of the Pearl City viaduct and the use of Very Early Strength Latex Modified Concrete for the deck repairs.

SSFM provided construction management services. A constructability review prior to the start of construction evaluated the ease of construction, cost efficiency, integration of construction knowledge, and the delivery process based on the design and overall project objectives. We monitored the design-build contractor’s compliance with their quality control/quality assurance plan and were responsible for the contract administration. Routine construction issues such as acceptability of materials, worked performed, rate of progress, and interpretation of the State Highways quality standards were all a part of the program.
