About the Project

In anticipation of the increased availability of secondary effluent from the on-going upgrade of the adjacent Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant to a full secondary treatment facility as required by the EPA consent decree. As the facility owner, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply requested that Veolia, the contract operator, upgrade the R1 water filtration and disinfection systems to enable increased reclaimed water production.

The improvements will increase R1 water production capacity up to 16 million gallons per day of combined R1 and R/O water, making non-potable water available throughout the Ewa plain. Using non-potable water for landscape irrigation will conserve precious drinking water sources and is a significant step toward sustainability and stewardship of natural resources.

SSFM provided project management, engineering design and construction management services for the upgrades The work includes installation of disc filters to replace the sand filter basins, a new ultraviolet disinfection system, new flow meters and vaults for the R1 and reverse osmosis distribution systems, and SCADA controls and instrumentation to accommodate the upgrades.
