About the Project

SSFM provided overall project management for the University of Hawaii at Hilo's Design-Bid-Build decommissioning of the Hoku Kea Observatory, overseeing planning, permitting, environmental review, and preparation of deconstruction and restoration plans for the summit site on Mauna Kea. The work navigated extensive cultural, environmental, and regulatory requirements, coordinating agency and stakeholder reviews to support the responsible removal of facilities and restoration of this highly sensitive location.
