Hawaii Water Systems Technical Studies Program Statewide Dam Break Analysis
State of Hawaii
CLIENT
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Honolulu District
About the Project
The hydrologic and hydraulic analysis to determine dam break floodplains for the Aepo Reservoir and the Elua Reservoir on the Island of Kauai was conducted primarily through computer modeling. SSFM was the prime consultant for teaming with West Consultants as the hydrology consultant.
The process included using GIS tools to process topographic data for both the hydrology and the hydraulic analyses. The team developed a detailed terrain model was to identify hazard areas using topographic data. Hydrology and hydraulic models were calibrated and validated to best available historic or regional data. Calibrated models were used to model and map a number of dam break events, from “full pool sunny day” to probable maximum flooding. The team prepared dam break analyses with evaluation of various inflow and dam failure scenarios to identify downstream inundation areas
The project team was awarded an “Award of Excellence” by the Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District.
