Short Range Transit Plan Update

The Maui Bus system has grown rapidly throughout its ten years of service. With a current annual ridership of over 2.3 million passengers, it has become one of the most successful small bus systems in the nation. SSFM provided sophisticated planning services to support the county in developing a comprehensive five-year plan which lays out a path forward for continued expansion of the Maui Bus system. On-board passenger surveys, assessment of a full range of socio-economic characteristics, analysis of extensive amounts of data, and facilitation of five community meetings were some of the tools employed by SSFM in support of the planning process.

The resulting plan will be used in a number of ways. Decision-makers at the local, state, and federal levels will rely upon it for policy planning and funding considerations. Maui Bus has been extremely successful in attracting federal funds to date, and this plan will also be used to help satisfy federal requirements for the continuation of funding over the next five years.
