Kahului Harbor Development Plan
Kahului Harbor in Wailuku, Maui is an active working deep draft harbor for handling cargo and fuel. It consists of three piers and numerous landside terminal improvements. Facility deficiencies and overcrowding have long constrained operations, requiring expansion for safety and efficiency.
As Prime Consultant, SSFM was responsible for preparing a development plan for the Harbor. The plan describes project goals and objectives, plan schematics, project sequencing and order of magnitude cost estimates. Assessing land acquisition alternates for expanding harbor operations, as well as a review of the mix of uses between commercial and passenger operations.
The scope of the improvements includes:
• Alternate lay outs for expansion area
• Review of Pier 1 need for fencing to separate passengers and cargo
• Upgrade to Pier 1 fuel line under DOT Harbors Statewide Fuel Facilities guidelines
• Strengthen Pier 2 surface, pave and add security fencing around back up areas
