Iwilei Resilience Roundtable

The Iwilei Resilience Roundtable, a four-day workshop in November 2018, was partially funded through the 100 Resilient Cities Initiative. The event engaged multiple City and State agencies, as well as private developers, to develop a conceptual vision for transit-oriented development considering the most current projections of sea level rise and other climate-related hazards in the Iwilei neighborhood.

SSFM worked with the City and County of Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting Transit-Oriented Development Division (DPP-TOD), Arcadis, and the City Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resilience to organize and conduct site visits and charrette-style workshops and design sessions to assess current land-use patterns, current and future performance of public space, and infrastructure needs. Based on the charettes and site visits, the team developed five conceptual development scenarios that were presented to local stakeholders. The scenarios explore ways to increase climate resilience while enhancing the economic potential of the area and safeguarding public functions and current business activity, incorporating urban design and engineering solutions including green infrastructure, floodable wetlands and parks, Dutch polders (hardened sea walls), and the use of fill to raise future development.
