Honolulu Zoo – Asian Tropical Forest Elephant Exhibit
The renovation of the elephant exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo presented unusual creative challenges. Creating an environment that meets American Zoo Society habitat standards meant a number of specific design features and a setting that is adaptable to elephant behavior. The exhibit is designed for three to five elephants, including a bull. The space is divisible into sections to segregate the bull when he is being aggressive and open to all of the animals when the bull is passive. Key design features include water pools and elevated planters for shade and greenery. Visitors enjoy unobstructed views of the animals and the zookeepers.
SSFM provided architectural and engineering services.
