Flood-Resilient Buildings
Flood-Resilient Buildings
Climate change will undoubtedly mean increased flooding in Hawaii. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) maps the base flood elevations (BFE) for all areas of the Islands. New construction requires that the elevation of a building’s lowest floor be designed to elevations that are sufficiently above FEMA’s base to accommodate any anticipated sea level rise. The breadth of SSFM’s projects means developing solutions that accommodate for the flooding of many structure types including provisions for flood retention and resiliency.
