Cheryl Soon, Ph.D, FAICP

Transportation Practice Leader

Cheryl joined SSFM in 2008 as manager of the firm’s Planning Group. A distinguished career in both the public and private sectors led to Cheryl being named a Fellow in the American Institute of Certified Planners, the highest honor available for a professional planner.

Cheryl’s professional experiences for Hawaii’s public agencies have helped shape the character and quality of the Islands. She was Director of the Department of Transportation Services for the City & County of Honolulu, Chief Planning Officer for the City & County of Honolulu, Deputy Director for Highways, State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation and Executive Director of the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization. Within the private sector Cheryl has held senior management positions with major Island planning firms.

Cheryl’s key interests at SSFM are to expand the firms work with public and private clients on multiple fronts with an emphasis on moving projects beyond planning and into delivery. These include implementing complete streets and smart growth, identifying workable solutions that can move planning visions into action and implementation, adaptation to climate change and disaster/resiliency. She is committed to Hawai‘i’s communities and using planning as a tool for economic advancement, civic engagement, and discourse.
