The American Society of Civil Engineers recently held their 2023 Pacific Southwest Symposium at California State University, Northridge. SSFM was a sponsor for the University of Hawaii, Manoa Chapter. The Symposium is an annual gathering where schools from Southern California and the UH come together to compete in various civil engineering challenges and other non-technical events. The civil engineering competitions include the Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Design Build, Sustainable Solutions, Surveying, Geo-Wall, Environmental, Transportation, and DeCADthalon events.
SSFM was well represented by Nyah Lemay and Kenneth Nguyen, our Civil Engineering Group interns from UH. Working with their fellow students, the UH Manoa chapter placed 1st in the Transportation competition and 2nd in the DeCADthalon. Their team finished 2nd overall of the 14 schools in the competition.
“The Symposium was an amazing experience that definitely rounded out my college experience” explained Nyah. “Throughout my time at UH I’ve been learning concepts that oftentimes seem disconnected from practical engineering. However, participating in the technical challenges at the Pacific Southwest Symposium gave me hands-on experience that helps make the connection between engineering practices and what I’ve learned at UH. It also helped me to strengthen bonds with my classmates and form relationships with attendees from other schools”
