Over its six decades of practice, SSFM International has always placed a priority on the quality of education on the Islands. A long time relationship in support of the engineering program at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa has not only contributed to the department’s excellence, but has brought the firm a number of excellent interns and professional staff.
SSFM has pledged its support for 4 years of full tuition scholarships for three undergraduate Civil and Environmental students, as well as full tuition for an incoming freshman.
Additionally, the SSFM International Graduate Fellowship in Planning will provide assistance for tuition, fees, and other expenses to a student working toward a master’s degree in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
As an alumni of the University, Michael P. Matsumoto, SSFM’s President/CEO explains, “I am pleased that SSFM International is able to support my alma mater, the College of Engineering, and our next generation of engineers in this important way. Scholarships have a profound impact on the lives of students, and make it possible for UH to attract, retain and train the outstanding future professionals our state needs.”
In accepting SSFM’s support, Brennon Morioka, Dean of the College of Engineering said, “As one of the oldest kama‘aina engineering firms in Hawaii, SSFM has made a long-standing commitment to our community. Their commitment continues through these scholarships and their relationship with the College of Engineering and our students. Their support for our students and their investment in mentoring Hawaii’s future leaders cannot be overstated. We are truly appreciative of Mike Matsumoto and his SSFM ‘ohana for their partnership, and we are excited about what the future holds for our students who will benefit from their generosity.”
One of SSFM’s beneficiaries is Sara Nakagaki, a senior civil engineering major who will graduate this Spring said, “SSFM’s scholarship has allowed me to pursue other opportunities and to become a more well-rounded person. Instead of having the constant worry of paying for school, I could focus on studying, and building a network with other future civil engineers.”
Founded in 1959, SSFM provides engineering, planning, construction management, development management and project management services in Hawaii and the Pacific. It has a long history of support for the educational community extending to high school STEM programs and a full scholarship at the University of Guam.
