Mokulele Highway Widening, Phase 1A
Mokulele Highway Phase 1A, is a one-mile road expansion that involved widening the heavily traveled two-lane Mokulele Highway to four-lanes, from its south end to Piilani Highway. At completion, the expansion resulted in major intersection improvements, a retaining wall, two-span bridge, and a precast, nine channel concrete box culvert. SSFM was the Construction Manager for the project.
Additional enhancements repositioned telephone poles and underground utilities, improved drainage, installed traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, landscaping with native Aki’aki grass, and the completion of the largest signalized intersection on Maui.
Similar to Mokulele Highway Phase 1C, the final roadway was comprised of four twelve-foot lanes with an eight-foot outside shoulder and 12-foot median with the typical pavement section comprised of a six-inch subbase, six-inch untreated permeable base, eight-inch glassphalt and three-and-a-half-inch AC Mix IV.
