Queen Kaahumanu Highway Widening
Phase 2
SSFM led the design team for this design build project that widens Queen Kaahumanu Highway from 2 lanes into a 4 lane divided highway. The 5 mile segment starts at the Keahole Airport Road and ends at the Kealakehe Parkway intersection. The program includes provision for a future 4 way signalized intersection at Kaiminani Road.
Elements of the project include design and construction of new pavements, drainage systems, sidewalks, traffic signal systems, pavement markings, traffic signs, guardrails, highway lighting, landscape planting and relocation and installation of utilities. In the course of construction, mitigating sensitive archaeological sites became a significant issue. The process provided temporary and permanent best management practices, and processing all permits for compliance with applicable Federal, State and local standards.
SSFM collaborated with the general contractor’s field office throughout the process, sharing daily real-time updates of civil 3D models, and allowing for immediate material quantity checks and constructability reviews.
