Hawaii Belt Road, Rehabilitation of Umauma Stream Bridge

The Umauma Stream Bridge is a 110 ft. tall steel girder and trestle bridge, originally constructed in 1911, and widened in the mid-1950s. Construction management and support services to modify the bridge included assembly of a temporary 1-lane Acrow bridge alongside the existing structure to accommodate traffic during construction. This required excavation of the adjacent banks to accommodate the approaches, concrete foundations with micropiles, shotcrete slope stabilization, erection of the steel Acrow towers and truss/deck structure as well as the A.C. pavement approaches and guardrails.

Rehabilitating the existing bridge included construction of concrete piers and foundation, modifying existing concrete abutments and wing walls, replacing old steel girders, removal and replacement of the concrete deck, installing concrete pier caps, friction pendulum bearings, and construction of concrete bridge railings, metal approach guardrails, and A.C. pavement reconstruction at the approaches.

This project is subject to historical requirements by the State Historic Preservation Division.
