2021 Tiny House Design Challenge Winner
SSFM is delighted to announce the winners of the 2021 Tiny House Design Challenge. Submissions were judged in two categories – People’s Choice through social media voting on Facebook, and Judge’s Choice by a panel of industry professionals. Kealakehe High School was selected as the choice of the judges while Waipahu High School won the popular vote. Each school will receive a $500 award provided by SSFM International.
The annual competition invites schools throughout Hawaii to design a tiny house. In normal times, the teams also built models of their houses but with the restrictions of Covid the teams created their homes virtually…on video.
The design brief for this year’s challenge called for the design of a tiny house for twin sisters who have just graduated from college. Born and raised in Hawaii, they want to stay in the islands. With their budget of $100,000, they want a fully-furnished, move-in ready tiny house. The twins are environmentally conscious and want an overall net-zero carbon footprint output for their house. Design criteria called for homes to be 500 square foot or smaller, light-framed construction using wood or cold-formed steel studs, with wall and roof sheathing. Walls must be a minimum of 8 ft. tall, and the homes must have at least one door and one window. The maximum budget for construction and furnishings is $100,000.
Clarice Masaki and Amy Salvador from SSFM organized the competition, working with schools to establish the rules and helping guide the team’s activities. Students were also encouraged to reach out to professionals in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry to support their projects.
