Lalamilo Development
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands undertook this complex series of five projects in order to provide housing lots for Hawaiian beneficiaries in an area of cultural significance. SSFM provided the sophisticated level of construction management services necessary to help the Department address the many challenges inherent in proper development of such sensitive sites.

As major excavation work got underway, for example, several inadvertent and unmapped burial sites were discovered. SSFM helped find solutions which included realignment of roadways and house lots. When the contractors encountered solid basalt rock, SSFM worked with them to establish an on-site rock crushing plant to make use of the excavated rock. SSFM even worked closely with the Department and the contractors to bring in an independent monitor to make sure no unexploded ordinances were present in areas that had not been swept for them.
