Design of Chuuk International Airport Runway, Taxiway, and Apron Rehabilitation

Island of Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia

The remoteness of Chuuk International Airport’s 6000 foot long and 150 foot wide runway, taxiway and apron on Chuuk Island in the Federated States of Micronesia meant equipment and materials needed to be imported from distant locations. Aggregates were barged from the Philippines, asphalt and concrete batching plants and other construction equipment from Guam and the airport owners are located on yet another island.

Work included milling and overlay of asphalt pavement, replacement of hardstands on the apron, concrete lining on the drainage channel, pavement markings, runway lights and perimeter AOA fence repair.

SSFM served as the prime consultant performing the evaluation and rehabilitation of the existing runway, taxiway, aircraft parking apron, and drainage system to improve flight safety. The scope also included the relocation of both existing electrical vaults.
