Island Experts

SSFM is a firm with enormous resources. Our practice on the Islands spans over half a century.
We know the islands. We know the people, the places, the customs
and the challenges of bringing projects to life here.

Island Experts

SSFM is a firm with enormous resources. Our practice on the Islands spans over half a century. We know the islands. We know the people, the places, the customs and the challenges of bringing projects to life here.

Where We Work

To best serve our clients we are committed to each island.
With offices on Maui, Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island, our people are part of the community.
They are connected to the local issues, constraints, customs and opportunities.
They are invested in making their home island a better place.

To best serve our clients we are committed to each island. With offices on Maui, Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island, our people are part of the community. They are connected to the local issues, constraints, customs and opportunities. They are invested in making their home island a better place.

Honolulu Oahu and Honolulu have been our corporate home since we were founded in 1959. We’ve grown up with the Island. Oahu’s military presence, land and sea ports, extensive urban infrastructure, private and public development, agrarian and tourist uses and role as seat of the State’s government have offered an amazing platform for growth and success. Our connections to the people and places that make it special are a significant part of the firm’s legacy. Michael P. Matsumoto, P.E., FACEC | President/CEO

Kauai Kauai’s economy is based almost entirely on tourism and agriculture. The scale of the Island’s projects tend to be smaller with tremendous dedication to the environment and its enhancement, preservation and sustainability. Our established relationships with the many jurisdictions that steward the Island’s future allow us to be an integral part of helping to shape the future. Steve Kyono, P.E. | Vice President Kauai Branch, Senior Project Manager

Maui Maui’s popularity has brought exceptional growth. Just a few years ago Kihei ranked as one of the fastest growing towns in the United States. Reaction to development means executing projects is more difficult, with entitlements and permitting especially arduous. Our Maui presence means we can help clients find ways to make their projects successful. Eric Matsuda, P.E, LPLS | Vice President, Maui, Senior Associate, Senior Project Manager, Civil Engineer

Hilo SSFM’s presence on the Big Island dates to 1999. It is the most changeable of Hawaii’s environments with the on-going seismic activity of five volcanos. Their influence on the Island’s physical makeup, infrastructure needs and governmental practices have defined the services we provide, including Disaster Response Assistance. Our Big Island team is deeply rooted in the Island with professional and personal commitments. Austen Drake, P.E., LEED AP | Deputy Manager, Hilo Branch Office

Guam Our presence on Guam allows SSFM to extend our Island Expertise to assisting in improving the local quality of life. We help to preserve the Island’s culture and character with solutions that are right for the native environment. Our Island capabilities include engineering design and construction management services. We work effectively throughout Guam and Micronesia for the Government of Guam, the US military and area commercial developers. Rizaldy Cortez | General Manager, Guam Office, Senior Civil Engineer, Construction Manager

Manila The Philippines is an island nation with a wealth of professional engineering talent. SSFM avails of this depth of resources with the location in Manila of a technical and production center. Our Manila office expands our capacity to respond quickly and efficiently to assignments from all of our offices and brings additional cost economies to every project.

Okinawa There are 32 U.S. military bases located on Okinawa. This significant military presence on the island, as well as elsewhere in Japan, has long represented an important SSFM clientele. We are able to provide military clients the advantage of locally based resources with our office in Okinawa. Our technologically equipped office with video conferencing, IT infrastructure and advanced communications facilities allows a logistical base close to our Department of Defense contracts. Stacey D.K. Miyamoto, PMP | Principal, Senior Project Manager, Small Business Compliance Officer
